What to Expect | Stevens Counseling Services
A Comfortable, Collaborative Process
Starting therapy is a meaningful step — and it’s natural to wonder what the process will look like.
At Stevens Counseling Services, my goal is to make therapy feel approachable, productive, and tailored to your unique needs. Whether you choose in-person sessions at my Arvada office or virtual therapy, you’ll know exactly what to expect each step of the way.
From our first conversation, I’ll work to create an environment where you feel respected, understood, and supported — a place where you can talk openly and begin to gain insight and direction.
The First Step: Complimentary Consultation
Before beginning therapy, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation.
This brief conversation gives us a chance to discuss what’s bringing you to therapy, answer any questions, and determine whether my approach is a good fit for your needs.
If we decide to move forward, we’ll schedule your initial session and discuss next steps.
Before Your First Appointment
Once you decide to begin therapy, you’ll receive access to a secure client portal where you can complete intake forms and review office policies. This helps maximize the value of your first session together.
Your First Session
During your first session, we’ll talk about your background, what’s been challenging lately, and what you’d like to achieve through therapy.
There’s no pressure to have everything figured out — this is simply a space to begin understanding where you are and where you’d like to go.
We’ll also discuss:
-
The structure and goals of therapy
-
Frequency of sessions
-
Confidentiality and privacy
-
How we’ll work collaboratively toward your goals
By the end of the first session, most clients have a clearer sense of what they want to focus on and how therapy can best support them.
What Therapy Looks Like
Therapy is an ongoing process of self-exploration, perspective, and growth.
Some clients come in with a specific issue in mind, while others seek a space for broader reflection and self-understanding.
Using a Strengths-Based and Narrative approach, we’ll:
-
Identify patterns and beliefs shaped by your past experiences
-
Explore how those experiences influence your current relationships, emotions, and decisions
-
Reframe limiting narratives to open new possibilities
-
Build on your existing strengths and develop tools for lasting change
Sessions are conversational and collaborative — it’s not about being analyzed or judged, but about having a supportive dialogue that fosters clarity and direction.
In-Person or Virtual: The Choice Is Yours
You can choose the format that fits your needs and schedule:
In-Person Therapy
5606 Olde Wadsworth Blvd
Suite 210
Arvada, CO 80002
A private, comfortable space in the heart of Olde Town Arvada.
Virtual Therapy
For adults anywhere in Colorado who prefer convenience, confidentiality, and flexible scheduling.
Both offer the same level of support, depth, and personalized care.
Fees & Insurance
I’m in-network with Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. I also accept private-pay clients.
While I’ll gladly provide assistance with billing, it’s always best to verify coverage directly with your insurance company before your first session to confirm copays, deductibles, and any session limits.
If you’re not using insurance, we can discuss rates and payment options during your consultation.
Length and Frequency of Therapy
Most sessions last 50 minutes and are held weekly or biweekly, depending on your needs and schedule.
Some clients come for a few months to work through a specific challenge, while others continue longer-term to deepen insight and maintain personal growth.
We’ll regularly check in to make sure therapy remains aligned with your goals and progress.
Taking the Next Step
Starting therapy can feel like a leap — but it’s also the first step toward clarity, balance, and meaningful change.
